Photograph Description
First colour image taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit of the Martian surface after it landed successfully on the planet on 4 January 2004. The dry, rocky floor of the Gusev Crater is seen. NASA scientists chose this location because the 145-kilometre-wide crater may once have contained a lake. The Spirit rover, and an identical one called Opportunity, will study Martian rocks and look for water on the planet. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
