Photograph Description
Voyager 2 image of white, high-altitude, “cirrus” clouds in the atmosphere above Neptune’s southern hemisphere. The picture clearly shows the vertical relief in Neptune’s atmosphere. The linear cloud formations range in width from 50 to 200 km, & their shadow widths range from 30 to 50 km. Voyager scientists calculated from this that the cirrus clouds are some 50 km higher than the surrounding (blue) cloud deck. The picture was recorded 2 hours before Voyager 2’s closest approach to Neptune at midnight on 24 August 1989. The range was 157,000 km & the resolution of the image is 11 km.
