Photograph Description

This image of Enceladus’ trailing hemisphere is a composite of images taken at ultraviolet, green and infrared wavelengths. This reveals structures not seen in visible light. This half of the moon is crossed by extensive valleys (blue/green). The marked lack of craters on this hemisphere, when compared to the leading hemisphere that is partly seen at right, indicates that its surface is relatively young, and that the moon may still be geologically active. Image taken on 17th January 2006 when Cassini was around 153,000 kilometres from Enceladus. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
