Photograph Description
The rover, part of which is seen at lower centre, took this image with its panoramic camera, looking back along its route. The rover’s wheel tracks are seen in the Martian soil. This view looks east towards a region called Tyrone (white). Because the rover was having difficulty moving through the Tyrone area, it was diverted to this location, Low Ridge, where it spent the winter. The wheel tracks have revealed a white-coloured subsoil similar to that seen at Tyrone. This view shows several areas investigated by the rover, including the Esperanza rock (upper right). Photographed in December 2006. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
