Photograph Description
Three types of rocks are seen here: thin, jagged rocks buried under the sand; light grey, rounded rocks; and dark, pockmarked rocks. The dark rocks are thought to be volcanic in origin. This image was obtained by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. The colours of the image were created by combining three camera filters designed to enhance colour differences in the Martian rocks and soils. The true-colour equivalent image is R360/249. Spirit landed in the Gusev Crater on Mars in January 2004, and obtained this image on 12 April 2006, the 809th Martian day of the rover’s mission. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
