John McEnroe v Tom Gullikson, first round match at Wimbledon on Court Number One, Monday 22nd June 1981.
John McEnroe was two flashpoints away from being thrown out of Wimbledon.
The number two seed, received one public waring and was then docked 2 penalty points as he beat Tom Gullikson 7-6, 7-5. 6-3 in a bad tempered confrontation on Court One.
McEnroe’s warning came after he angrily smashed a racket, stamping on the strings and yanking off the handle.
Then he was fined the two penalty points for calling umpire Edward James “the pits of the world”, and “an incompetent fool”. (photo by Mike Maloney / Mirror Trinity Group Archives)
