Photograph Description

The rings consist of particles of nearly pure water ice and meteoric dust and span almost 300,000 kilometres. The larger space in the rings here is the Encke Gap and the smaller gap is the Keeler Gap, both of which are found in the A ring. Prometheus, one of Saturn’s moons, is seen as a minute white speck at lower right. Beneath Prometheus is a faint line, which is Saturn’s F ring. This image was taken with the narrow-angle camera on board the Cassini spacecraft. It was obtained at a distance of approximately 1.8 million kilometres from Saturn, on 13th April 2007.
