Photograph Description
Panoramic view of the Gusev Crater region of Mars taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. The field of view is around 160 degrees, and encompasses a region of dunes known as the El Dorado ripple field. It is a composite of images taken between 30th December 2005 and 1st January 2006. Spirit landed on Mars on 4th January 2004 and has made many geological measurements of rocks and soil, and studied the Martian atmosphere. A twin rover, Opportunity, landed on the other side of the planet on 25th January 2004. This is a true- colour rendering of the scene. (Photo by Science Photo Library)
